BMX Track for Platt Fields Park
I have given my support in principle to plans to build a national standard BMX track in a disused area of Platt Fields Park. Two of the biggest issues highlighted by local residents in the ward have been anti social behaviour closely followed by lack of youth facilities. The two are in my opinion interlinked so I welcome any proposals to offer positive activities for young Mancunians.
The proposals are out for consultation at the moment and must of course go through the planning process, a prerequisite of my full support is to maximise free access to young people and ensure that the site is secure causing minimum disruption to local residents.
To view the plans and get a flavour for the arguments for and against please visit the Friends of Platt Fields Park Website http://www.plattfields.org/bmx.htm .

Thanks Mike
Hi there,
Good to see interest in the plans for the park. If anyone wishes to know more about the proposal, information can be found on the relatively new (and still under construction!) Friends of Platt Fields website.
Thanks Tim'
I'll provide a link to the excellent site, very useful information on the proposals.
Mike.
Who's building the track? The design is very poor and far from the national standard track Manchester deserves. It looks little more than a play track. If the space is going to be utilised as a BMX track it should be done properly, this isn't something Manchester BMXers have asked for. Extending the skatepark or building trails (dirt jumps) would be more popular with riders and certainly trails could be done in a smaller area and at far less cost. A badly built and poorly designed track is completely unsatisfactory and will need rebuilding very soon or kids will get bored with it and that will lead to misuse, check the many other play tracks around, ask anyone who races and they'll tell you the designs are substandard. As for the people building the track, they should be trackbuilders not contractors. Riders are the best trackbuilders, a gang of contractors with a JCB and a load of stone won't make a good track, building jumps is a fine art and not something that will work with contractors who've never built a jump before with a few visits from a consultant.
