After a number of attempts to improve the trading activity of the Twisted Public House in  Fallowfield,  these premises are letting our community down. I and my Labour colleagues want to see a thriving Fallowfield Centre, that provides safe and entertaining bars that are good neighbours to local residents. Twisted is not one of them, I have therefore submitted to letter below to revoke it's license.

"I concur with Greater Manchester Police, colleagues and residents in my objection to the continued trading of the Twisted Public House in the Fallowfield Ward.

Despite the intervention of key stakeholders such as the police and environmental health, the licensee has failed to improve matters having little regard for customers and the neighbouring communities.

Twisted is poorly run and managed, not helped by an absentee landlord and unsupported staff.

The premises are unclean both within the building as well as the outside grounds, health and hygiene are not familiar concepts associated with Twisted.

Customers have been seen on the roof, often intoxicated and are clearly a risk to the themselves and others.

The police have made numerous visits in relation to ASB and criminal activity.


Twisted should have it's license revoked because it contributes to crime and disorder in the Fallowfield Ward.

It is detrimental to the health and public safety of young people.

The licensee is not a fit and responsible person to discharge his operating duties under the Licensing Act".

 

Over £4 million secured for Alexandra Park

Manchester has more Green Flag award winning parks than any other authority in the country. One park that has required some real care and attention is Alexandra Park on the edge of Fallowfield ward.
Cllr David Royle stated" Working together with my Labour colleagues and the people's panel we were able to shape a community owned bid to the lottery and press our council into providing match funding. This is fantastic news for the local community and the city"

The £2.2 million from the HLF will be matched by funding from the Council creating a project that will bring major physical improvements to the Park alongside a programme of community activities.
The coming months will see preparation for the Capital Works which should begin around October 2012 and last around 15 months.
Applications have also been made to Sport England and other sports bodies which focus on transforming the sports facilities in the Park.

Housing improvements continue under
Manchester Labour
As part of the previous Labour Government's decent housing pledge, work continues in Fallowfield to transform City South Housing for Tenant's.
Councillor David Royle stated " This £92 million programme would not have happened without the last Labour government. It is about more than bricks and mortar with environmental improvements as well as employment initiatives as part of the programme. One of the first acts of this Tory led government was to drastically cut investment in social and affordable housing, I am determined to stand up to this injustice while pressing for much needed resources".

Lib Dem Tory cuts go too far too fast

As details of the scale of Tory Liberal cuts emerge one thing is clear - this is an unfair attack on the North, with funding being switched from Labour controlled cities to affluent areas in the South. While Manchester faces huge and unprecedented cuts to jobs and services, places like wealthy Dorset have had an increase in funding.


And what have the Lib Dem Tory cheerleaders in Manchester got to say about it? According to Clegg & Cameron’s man in Manchester, Cllr Simon Ashley, this is a "fair settlement" for our City. To add insult to injury he claims to be “comfortable” with the pace and depth of the cuts!

In response Labour's Candidate for Fallowfield & Whalley Range, Grace Fletcher Hackwood said:

"The Lib Dems cannot be trusted to stand up for Manchester. Grace Welcomes Better Homes

Grace Fletcher Hackwood Labour candidate for Fallowfield today welcomed the progress in bringing Fallowfield social housing closer to the 2012 quality homes standard.

The 2012 quality home standard was a manifesto commitment by the previous Labour Government to ensure that every tenant had a decent home and environment to live in. Over £92 million was secured for the Fallowfield area which has helped to transform the local housing and environment.

Grace stated" I am proud that the Labour Party when in government was able to work with City South Housing Trust to deliver better homes for thousands of tenants in Fallowfield. If elected I will work with the Team at City South to ensure that this good work remains on track. I am of course concerned that this Lib Dem Tory Government has cut the future housing budgets by over 80% and now seeks to remove new tenants housing  rights, reduce housing benefit support and put up social rents".

A Labour Victory for Fallowfield

After months on the campaign trail to secure election victories at both local and parliamentary elections you the important people have decided. I am honored to have been re-elected as your Labour Councillor with an increased majority and Gerald Kaufman is equally honoured to be your Labour MP. We are of course disappointed that we are now likely to have a Tory and Lib Dem coalition government but as socialist we will do our utmost to protect local services from their savage cuts.

Better shops - a change you will see

Plans have been submitted for a retail and residential development which would breathe new life into Fallowfield Triangle.
Aldi and Great Places Housing Group, working closely with Manchester City Council, have made a planning application to create a new 1364 sq m store, 14 two-bedroom apartments and 10 three and four-bedroom houses.
The new food store would anchor the regeneration of the centre by increasing the number of visitors to the centre, supporting existing businesses and helping bring the vacant units back into use.
A car park for the centre, something which residents and traders have been calling for, would also be created as part of the scheme with 85 spaces.
The majority of people replying to a consultation carried out by Great Places and Aldi, which attracted almost 200 responses, were in favour of the plans.
The proposals focus on a 2.01 acre site bounded by Lloyd Street South, Hart Road and Platt Lane which currently contains St Crispin's church and social club and the UK Scaffold Yard.
Promising a "high quality, contemporary and modern" architectural design the new store and homes would complement the £1 million of environmental improvements which have been carried out to the Triangle in recent years. Further facelift work would take place to the back of shops along Platt Lane and Lloyd Street South as part of the plans.
Other investment in the Triangle area included last year's revamp of Fallowfield Library and new artwork at the corner of Platt Lane and Hart Lane based on designs by pupils at Wilbraham Primary School.

Local Councillor Mike Amesbury, said: "It's heartening that the investment which has already taken places in services and artwork to improve the area around the Triangle will be underpinned by this major scheme. Local people have been calling for improved shopping facilities for sometime and I'm proud that together with my Labour colleagues we are able to make this change happen"

While these elections are about who is best served to secure the economic recovery, of equal importance is the quality of the local environment. Graffiti, dumped rubbish, potholes and general neglect can bring a local community down resulting in increased crime and further anti social behaviour. Further to my previous post the graffiti vandal has struck again in the Whalley Range part of Fallowfield ward. The following acts of vandalism have been reported to be cleaned up.

Cleaning up Whalley Range

Out and about in the patch today with local residents who informed me about a spate of graffiti in the Whalley Range part of the ward. Reported this to the Street Environment Manager for the local area. These neighbourhood workers are a result of a Manchester Labour initiative to clean up our local communities. RE-ELECT SIR GERALD KAUFMAN & MIKE AMESBURY ON THURSDAY MAY 6th

Well, what seems like an eternal wait is over. Gordon has called the General Election for Thursday May 6th and this time it is very serious. Over the coming days you will decide who represents your interests at Manchester Town Hall and in Westminster. These elections will be very close and the choice will be between a Labour Government or a Tory Government. A choice that is between a Labour Party that puts economic growth and fairness first, or the same old Tory Party that will cut, cut and cut again putting the economic recovery at risk.

The Tories are a change that we cannot afford.

Support Students

I do encourage both students and Labour supporters to sign up to the N.U.S. Votes for Students campaign. This aims to peg tuition fees at the current level of £3225. The Lib Dems policies on Higher Education funding are in disarray after several U Turns on abolition of Tuition fees. Labour have re-introduced grants for working class students which is a welcome step forward, together we need to ensure that we press any future government to freeze fees.

New BMX bikes - U Decided

Paid a visit to the local BMX youth club last night who were sporting five brand new bikes. The money was courtesy of the U Decide event where residents voted for what they deemed to be worthy community projects. The Olympic standard BMX track has gone from strength to strength and has proved to be a huge success with both local young people and world class BMX riders alike. I'm proud to have helped to secure the £300,000 facility in Platt Fields Park.

New Tot's Community Football Club in Fallowfield

Young people from across Manchester celebrated the launch of a new Football Club at the Platt Lane Complex this week, with a small sided football festival attended by Manchester’s City’s Patrick Vieira.
The event was a taster session for the recently established Platt Lane City FC - the city's newest Football Club for young people aged 5 years and above, which will create teams for all ages and abilities, including disabled teams.
Platt Lane City FC has been set up as a community football club, working towards the chartered standard award which is a sign of best practice for children involved, and has been established to give local children the chance to be involved with a local football club at minimum cost.
At the launch, the young players got to meet one of Manchester City’s latest signings, Patrick Vieira and club mascot, Moonchester, before being given the opportunity to play a series of short matches. The event gave the youngsters the chance to experience first hand the thrill of playing football in one of Manchester’s best training facilities. It also served as a great introduction to the new club.
Councillor Mike Amesbury, executive member for culture and leisure at Manchester City Council, said: "Manchester has a rich football heritage and we're keen to work with partners such as Manchester City Football Club and the Platt Lane Complex to provide as many opportunities as we can for our young people to play the game at the lowest possible cost.
"We have agreed to freeze all charges for all activities during 2010/11 to help local people during this challenging financial time and the club and council will also be investing in a new indoor playing surface in the Dome to ensure that we offer the best possible facilities for the players and our communities.
"This event was a great success and we hope the young people who took part so enthusiastically will keep playing football and keep coming back."

Happy 100 Platt Fields

As reported on the blog a couple of days ago, the launch of the Centenary for Platt Fields was held yesterday and was a tremendous success with around 70 people in attendance. I had the honour of making the opening speech as both as the Executive Member for Leisure as well as being a local Councillor. It was especially pleasing to introduce the honouree President of the Friends of Platt Fields, Sir Gerald Kaufman MP who made an excellent speech. Special thanks go to Victor, Anne and the Friends, Sainsburys for providing sponsorship towards the clock and Manchester Leisure staff for their continued dedication. http://www.plattfields.org/

Platt Fields goes back in time

Platt Fields Park will turn back the hands of time with the installation of a clock to the front of the boathouse for the first time in 50 years.
The unveiling will mark the official launch of the park’s centenary celebrations on Wednesday 17 February 2010, which will last throughout the year. Everyone is welcome to come and watch the curtains part and the handsome black and gold timepiece revealed. And, unlike the original (probably hand wound clock), this one will change the time automatically whenever the clocks change from winter to summer time etc.

It is believed that a clock face used to adorn the boathouse helping visitors with their timekeeping before it was removed sometime in the mid 20th century. It will now be reintroduced as a nod to the park’s great history and to mark the park’s journey forwards towards the next 100 years and local people and visitors are all welcomed to witness this historic occasion.
One local resident remembers: "The clock was used to teach us children how to tell the time. We’d be fishing for tiddlers and check when it was time for tea and get home sharpish so as not to annoy our mam."

The reintroduction of the clock to the park is a popular decision, welcomed by local residents, the Friends group and Manchester City Council alike.

Anne Tucker, Secretary of the Friends of Platt Fields Park said: "Putting the clock back on the boathouse’ was one of the first suggestions made by local people when we asked them how to celebrate the centenary. We have raised the money from donations and subscriptions from our members and other friends. And we are delighted that Sainsbury’s have offered a substantial grant towards its installation."

The history surrounding the original Platt Fields Park clock is sketchy with various theories about when it last kept time in the park. The Friends of Platt Fields would welcome any memories, details of dates, early photographs or any other information about the clock. Contact email@plattfields.org, or phone 248 9331.
The information could be used in a unique publication about the park and photographic exhibition at Platt Hall to mark the centenary, which is one part of a programme of events that the park has planned throughout the year.

Fallofield Councillor Mike Amesbury, (Manchester City Council’s executive member for culture and leisure) said: "Platt Fields Park is a Manchester gem and the history attached to it is something to be celebrated. We’re so proud that the park has reached this fantastic milestone and look forward to the next 100 years, as it continues to welcome local people and visitors from miles around to enjoy this special city centre park that has so much to offer everyone."
As part of the centenary celebrations, the Costume Gallery at Platt Hall will reopen its doors in March after a £1million makeover, and will include an exciting exhibition entitled 100 years of fashion, to link to the park’s anniversary. The year-long programme of events will include a special centenary weekend in May to celebrate the anniversary of the park’s opening on 7 May 1910.
The clock is being made by Smith of Derby, who have been clockmakers for over 600 years.
The clock will be unveiled at 12.30pm on Wednesday 17 February and everyone is welcome to attend.
